United Kingdom to Ivory Coast: BSC Checks Before Sailing

Shipping ocean freight from the United Kingdom to Ivory Coast requires an Ivory Coast BSC. The shipper or freight forwarder is responsible for obtaining the certificate and providing the validated copy to the importer.

You can start with the bill of lading even when the carrier is still preparing the final version. This is usually better than waiting until every document is complete and leaving no time for corrections.

What to Send From the United Kingdom

Prepare digital copies of the following documents for the BSC application:

• Bill of Lading: A draft copy can be used to begin the application. It should show the shipper, consignee, notify party, vessel, voyage, ports, cargo and container details.
• Commercial Invoice: The cargo description, value and parties should agree with the bill of lading.
• Freight Invoice: Send this when the ocean freight value is not already shown on the commercial invoice.
• Export Declaration: The declaration for the UK export must match the cargo, value and shipment information shown elsewhere.
• Packing List: Check the quantities, weight, dimensions and packing details against the invoice and bill of lading.
• Certificate of Insurance: This provides the insurance information required for the shipment.
• Certificate of Origin: This confirms that the goods were made in the country of origin
• FDI Import Licence: The Fiche de Déclaration à l’Importation comes from the consignee in Ivory Coast.

• Compare weights and quantities: The bill of lading, commercial invoice, packing list and export declaration should not give conflicting figures.

• Check special cargo details: Volume must be stated on the bill of lading for roll-on/roll-off and breakbulk cargo.

Some shipping lines may also ask for the BSC number on the bill of lading. Check the carrier’s documentation instructions before departure so the number can be added when required.

Direct Cargo and In-Transit Shipments

The final destination determines which cargo tracking note applies.

A shipment discharged in Ivory Coast with a final destination in Ivory Coast requires the Ivory Coast BSC. This covers cargo entering through Abidjan, San Pedro or another Ivorian discharge port for local import clearance.

Cargo merely passing through Ivory Coast on its way to Ghana, Mali, Liberia or Burkina Faso does not require the Ivory Coast BSC. The destination country may have its own certificate requirement instead.

Confirm the final destination before applying. Do not select the certificate only from the discharge port shown on the booking.

What Happens if the BSC Is Late or Missing?

Cargo arriving without a validated Ivory Coast BSC may not be cleared by customs. It can be held at the port while the importer deals with the missing certificate and any instructions from the authorities.

This may result in:

• Clearance delays
• Demurrage and port storage charges
• Fines or other customs penalties
• Extra work correcting documents after departure

The safer approach for a UK exporter is to send the bill of lading as soon as the shipment is booked, collect the remaining documents and approve the draft well before arrival.

Waiting until the vessel is close to Ivory Coast leaves little room for consignee registration problems or mismatched shipment details.
